Become a part of Boots and Roots

Niels Ole Krogh

I helped found Boots and Roots because I fell in love with Mozambique and the Mozambicans when I was posted as a foreign worker in 1984. In light of the great inequality in the country and in the world and the threatening climate change, which hits particularly hard in the global south, I want to show solidarity with Mozambicans through concrete action.

Nelson Benzane

The world is crying – The people behind Boots and Roots understand the pain and will do their part to remove it for the benefit of all.
By supporting Boots and Roots, you show care for our beautiful planet – here where all life should find shelter.

Vasco Benzane

In 1987, I completed a one-year education in Denmark. You Danes have a fantastic country, and it pleases me deep in my heart that I can once again collaborate with you to get my country Mozambique back on its feet. It is a long journey, but Boots and Roots is an important step and living proof of solidarity.

How it went

Boots and Roots has roots in Niels Ole Krogh’s stay in Mozambique in the mid-1980s.
Here he was posted as a rural worker, specifically as a hotel consultant at the large Hotel Rovuma in the center of Maputo.

His interpreter was Vasco Benzane. Niels Ole was 25 years old and Vasco 22 years old, but since the Dane knew less about Mozambique and the culture here than could be under a fingernail, Vasco became both an adviser and a friend.

The contact was never interrupted and at some point Vasco’s son, Nelson, reported to Niels Ole. It turns into long conversations over the internet. Like all other young people in Mozambique, Nelson wants to go abroad, where the prospects for a good life are perceived to be far better than in the South African country.
Long story short: Nelson gets a year and a half free stay at Løgumkloster Højskole with the intervention of headmaster Ursula Dieterich-Petersen.

Nelson wants to study to become a teacher in Denmark, but is not welcome in the country. He travels back and then follows Niels Ole to investigate whether he can support the Benzane family and preferably many more families in Mozambique.

» We want to curb climate change, fight poverty and work for democracy and enlightenment«

After two research trips to the country, Vasco, Nelson and Niels Ole decide that nurseries must be established. They must be run by families who earn a living, and at the same time tens of thousands of trees must be planted against climate change.
On 24 April, Fødder Rødder is founded at Løgumkloster College. Over 30 have turned up for the founding general meeting.
Everyone is determined to make an effort to help slow climate change, fight poverty and work for democracy and enlightenment.
We have entered into an agreement with the Mozambican NGO Livaningo. The first project is being described and the financing is falling into place.
